Before Henna Appointment

To properly prepare your skin for henna, cleanse the area thoroughly with soap and water, avoiding any lotions, oils, or creams beforehand; gently exfoliate a day or two prior to remove dead skin cells, and ensure the skin is completely dry before applying the henna paste; if necessary, use a mild alcohol swab to remove any remaining residue on the skin surface

Key points to remember:

  • Clean skin is essential:

Wash the area where you want the henna design with warm water and soap to remove dirt, oils, and debris.

  • Exfoliate gently:

Exfoliate the skin a day or two before your henna appointment to remove dead skin cells, which can prevent the henna from staining properly.

  • Avoid moisturizers:

Do not apply lotions, creams, or body butters to the area where you want the henna applied, as they can create a barrier that prevents the henna from staining as deeply.

  • Consider using rubbing alcohol:

If you have very oily skin, you can lightly wipe the area with a cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol before applying henna.

  • Remove hair:

If necessary, shave or wax the area where you want the henna design to ensure smooth skin contact with the paste.

  • Scheduling your henna:

Henna stain takes about 2 days to develop so plan your appointment according to when you want the darkest stain.

  • Manicures should be done before henna application.

  • Shower before your appointment. After henna, avoid contact with water for 24 hours for the best stain results.

  • Spray Tan AFTER your henna - NOT before! The spray will block contact between the skin and the henna paste.

  • Drink water:

Happy hydrated skin cells create a better stain and last longer. After the paste is off, that’s the time to lotion and oil up to keep the stain on longer and then AVOID exfoliation as that will take the skin cells back off.

Day Of Appointment

  • Wear appropriate clothing. Henna paste needs time to dry and should not be disturbed for several hours.

  • Consider wearing short sleeves, clothing that will leave open the skin you want decorated, bring flip-flops.

  • During henna application, do not talk on your phone or talk with your hands. The less you move, the quicker and neater the henna design will come out. You would be surprised how much movement occurs that you may not realize- even turning your head to look at something or talk to someone can move the hands and arms.

  • Have your payment method easily accessible or anything you will need from your bag. If your hands have henna, you don't want to dig in your bag! Larysa’s policies are to take payment in advance for services.

  • Plan some extra time to let the henna dry. After application, plan to spend about 20 extra minutes for dry time. Add some additional time if you plan to have the design wrapped. Bring your ace bandage or something you’d like to wrap with- that would be ok if henna stain transfers to that fabric.

  • Consider bringing a friend to drive you. The less you have to do, the better your henna will stay in place. After you get henna, it’s great to feel pampered and relaxed.

  • Avoid showering or chlorine pool on your appointment day!

After Appointment

  • Leave henna paste on as long as possible- overnight is ideal- the longer the paste is on, the darker the stain and the longer it can last.

  • When you first remove the henna paste the stain will be bright orange- it will develop into more of a brown color over 2-3 days which is why you want to schedule your appointment taking into account when you want your stain to be optimal for your event.

  • Henna develops best on a body kept warm- so stay in a warm area, use a heating pad, or hold a hot drink.

  • When you are ready to remove the paste, flake off the paste with your fingers or gently with a butter knife outdoors or over a trash can. Do NOT wash it with water. You can also rub oil such as olive or coconut oil to remoisten it while sealing the stain into your skin and beginning the moisturizing process.

  • Avoid chlorine pools or washing the area the first day.

  • At first the stain will appear orange, but over the next 24-72 hours it will continue to darken – remember, every person gets a slightly different color based on aftercare, skin chemistry, and location on the body.

  • Henna cannot be washed off, but fades as your skin exfoliates - towel dry gently. When the design is on its last days, you may then want to exfoliate to get the remainder off. Sugar scrubs, body scrubs, body brushes can work wonderfully.

  • For a longer lasting stain, use a henna balm to protect your henna. Natural based lotions, shea, cocoa butter etc make great protectants.
